Photo credit to Elsa Rhae & Barron 6t's the end of the longest most fun filled festival day or birthday party, and you have a living room full of unicorns, tigers, and foxes (oh my!). As much as those little beasts would love to stay dressed up, all good things must come to an end, and face paint is no different! So how do you clean this stuff off anyway? Face paint can be rather pigmented, and the high quality stuff is made to stay throughout the day. This can make wash off a little more difficult. Of course, you can always just have your kiddo take a shower or bath and let them work it out on their own! This method has worked well for my older kiddos, they always come out clean! For smaller kiddos, you'll want to take a mild cleanser like baby shampoo or a non-abrasive face wash, some warm water and a gentle wash cloth, rub the soap onto the paint in a circular motion with the warm wet washcloth until the paint loosens. You can then wipe clean with another clean, wet washcloth until the pigment is gone. For the most stubborn pigments, any cooking oil dabbed onto a paper towel or cotton ball will loosen just about anythinge remaining. Be sure to give the skin another soapy wash after rubbing with oil to remove any excess oil.
Each of my face paintings are finished with a touch of festival glitter. This is a oil based glitter, similar in consistency to vaseline. The base soaks into the skin while adhering the glitter chunks in the process. The glitter chunks don't wash off with soapy water like face paint! I like to scrape mine off with a plastic card (like an old arcade card), and then wash the rest of the face with warm soapy water. The occasional stray glitter often remains, but I like to think of it as a memory of a happy time! Masking tape can help clean off any last remaining bits if needed. Another question I often hear is "How do you remove glitter tattoos?" Personally, I wear them until my skin sheds the adhesive. For me this is about 4-5 days later, though I've seen my glitter tattoos last over a week! Maybe the texture is bothersome, maybe you're just tired of looking at it. Whatever the reason, glitter tattoos can be removed by soaking your favorite skin moisturizer on the tattoo for about 10 minutes. You can then wipe away the adhesive, which peels like latex. It's important to clean those faces at the end of a fun day, despite their protests to go to sleep as the magical being they've been all day. Though we use the highest quality paint materials, everyone's skin needs to breath and repair itself at night. Your pillowcases will thank me later.
